We get to know that the people who did not obey the military law were identified as spies and executed in this week’s reading. This idea of the “spy” played a decisive role in the expansion of military law to the citizen population. It is actually a kind of intimidation, which forced the people to obey the orders and military law. The word “spy” is also a way used by the Japanese army to threaten violence. Moreover, this kind of label or identity into Okinawan people’s daily lives thrust discipline into the core of these people. Just like the text mentioned, “the employment of violence is endlessly anticipated in this mode of identity”. In the lecture, the Japanese 32nd Army’s arrival in the islands was accompanied by “comfort stations” and “comfort women”, primarily from Korea. Besides, the wealthier homes were requisitioned for officers’ quarters and “comfort stations”. Okinawan people were afraid of speaking against this kind of behavior, which would be considered “spy” and against their military law, so they chose to ignore it.
